Sub-Zero model number guide
Find your model and serial, decode the series, and get the right genuine OEM parts the first time.
Your Sub-Zero model and serial tag is usually inside the fresh-food compartment — upper-left wall or ceiling — and often duplicated behind the lower grille. Those numbers decode the series and build year, which tells us the correct genuine OEM parts. Send them when you call and we can often quote a likely range before we arrive. The $89 service call is waived with your repair.

Find your numbers
Where to look, step by step
- 1
Open the fresh-food door
Most built-ins put the model/serial tag on the upper-left side wall or the ceiling of the refrigerator compartment.
- 2
Check behind the grille
On many units a duplicate tag sits behind the lower front grille, near the condenser — pop the grille and look up.
- 3
Write down both numbers
Record the full model number and the serial number exactly, including letters — they decode the series and the build.
- 4
Send them when you call
Give us the model and serial at (650) 668-1554 and we can often quote a likely repair range before we arrive.
Decode the series
What the prefix tells us
The first characters of the model number identify how your Sub-Zero is built — and how it is serviced.
| Series prefix | What it is | Typical Walnut Creek homes |
|---|---|---|
| BI | Built-In integrated refrigerator/freezers and combinations | Modern Walnut Creek estate and remodel kitchens |
| 600 / 700 (Classic) | Long-running Classic built-in series | Many Rossmoor and Walnut Heights homes, 15–25 years old |
| DS / Designer | Flush-inset column refrigeration and freezer/refrigerator drawers | Seamless, panel-ready modern kitchens |
| PRO | Stainless professional-style units with dual compressors | Enthusiast and large estate kitchens |
| IC / UC | Built-in ice makers and undercounter refrigeration | Butler’s pantries, bars and islands |
| Wine columns | Single- and dual-zone wine storage | Estate collections across the Diablo Valley |
Right part, first time
Why we ask for the model up front
Knowing the model is the difference between one tidy visit and a parts-ordering delay. Once you have your numbers, start with Sub-Zero repair or check the repair cost guide. Not sure what is wrong yet? Run the self-diagnosis checklist first.
- The model + serial confirm the exact genuine OEM part for your build.
- Fewer return trips — we arrive with the right component in hand.
- A likely repair range before the visit, firmed up after diagnosis.

Our built-in Sub-Zero stopped holding temperature the week of a dinner party. They diagnosed a failing condenser fan the same afternoon, had the part on the van, and the $89 service call was waived once we approved the repair. Fridge has been rock-solid since, and they stand behind the labor for a year.

We have a 22-year-old Sub-Zero 650 in our Rossmoor place and assumed it was done for. Instead of pushing a $9,000 replacement they walked us through a sealed-system repair with a clear written quote, then honored it to the dollar. Honest people — rare in this trade.

My Sub-Zero wine column had drifted up to 60°F and I was worried about the collection. The tech found a failed evaporator fan and a clogged drain line, fixed both, and showed me how to keep the dual zones stable. Careful around the custom cabinetry too.
Model number answers
Sub-Zero model number FAQ
Where is the model number on a Sub-Zero?
On most built-in Sub-Zero units the model and serial tag is inside the fresh-food compartment — usually the upper-left side wall or the ceiling — and often duplicated behind the lower front grille near the condenser. Write down the full model and serial exactly, including letters.
Why does the model number matter for repair?
The model and serial pin down the exact series, year and revision, which determines the correct genuine OEM parts. With those numbers we order the right component the first time, avoid return trips, and can often give you a likely repair range before the visit.
What do the Sub-Zero series prefixes mean?
BI is Built-In, the 600/700 series are the older Classics common in Rossmoor, DS/Designer are flush-inset columns and drawers, PRO are stainless professional units, and IC/UC cover ice makers and undercounter units. Wine columns are their own line. The prefix tells us how your unit is built and serviced.
My tag is faded or unreadable — what now?
It happens, especially on older units. Take a clear photo of whatever remains and note the unit’s width and configuration. We can usually identify the series from those details plus the install age, then confirm parts once we are on-site.
Does the serial number tell you the age?
Yes — Sub-Zero serials encode the build date, which helps us judge expected wear, parts availability and whether a repair-versus-replace conversation makes sense for an older unit. It is especially useful for the 15–25 year old Classics around Walnut Creek.
Can you quote a repair from just the model number?
Often we can give a likely range once we know the model, the symptom and your location. The firm written quote still comes after an on-site diagnosis, but the model number lets us arrive with the right parts and a realistic estimate in hand.

Where the model/serial tag hides
The same numbers that decode the series also tell us where to look on your unit.
| Tag location | Typical unit | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh-food compartment, upper-left wall | Most built-in refrigerator/freezers | Open the door and look high and to the left |
| Ceiling of the fresh-food compartment | Many column and Designer units | Look straight up inside |
| Behind the lower front grille | Most units carry a duplicate tag here | Pop the grille near the condenser |
| Interior side wall near the hinges | Some wine and undercounter units | Check both side walls |
